5月7日（木）に、マッカーシー下院院内総務が、共和党下院議員手動で、大学、メディア、経済など幅広い範囲で中国共産党が関連している問題について調査および対応を進めるような中国タスクフォースを立ち上げると記者会見を行った。幅広い委員会に所属する共和党下院議員が現段階では所属しているが、マッカーシー議員は、民主党議員の参加を歓迎すると呼びかけている。
以下に引用したThe Hillによると1年以上も共和党議員と民主党議員同数で、中国へのタスクフォースを進めていたが、数カ月前にパンデミック到来でペンディングしてしまったのを共和党はもう待てないということのようだ。
これはもう決定的であり、米中ディカップリングの動きが加速することになる。

調査対象の一つが、中国がいかに米国大学に関与しているかだ。下院議員が調査したところによると、2014年～2019年の間に海外から米国教育機関への資金援助は157億ドルだが、そのうち中国だけで11億ドルあったようだ。とりわけ、ハーバード大学と中国の武漢科学技術大大学の資金的な結びつきは大きく報道された。
また、上院議員のチャック・グラスリー（共和党No.3）は、 孔子学院を設置している全米の大学をはじめとした教育機関に、孔子学院の脅威、背後にある共産党のリスクを再度検討するように書簡を70通以上送ったようだ。孔子学院は、トランプ政権がはじめた米中摩擦からずいぶん減ったようだが、それでもまだこの記事によると、全米に100カ所も存在していることには驚く。大半はカレッジか大学に設置してある。尚、12歳以下の学校500カ所以上で、孔子学院の授業が行われているらしい。プロパガンダ戦略以外の何物でもないだろう。米国では、地方政府（州政府ではなく、カウンティ単位かな？）によって、授業が異なる。財政が厳しいエリアでは、いわゆる音楽、体育などの専門教員を雇用できないので、そういった授業は保護者の寄付で雇ったりしているのが日常だ。だとすると、漢字を教えるなどという名目で共産党を礼賛するようなことをやっていてもおかしくはないだろう。

Chuck Grassley of Iowa wrote a March letter to the more than 70 schools and universities in the U.S. that host Confucius Institutes, asking them to meet with federal law enforcement to get a “full understanding of the risks to both your institution and our national security” posed by Chinese influence on campus. “U.S. Government agencies, including within the Intelligence Community, assert that the Communist Chinese Government uses Confucius Institutes embedded in our academic institutions as a propaganda tool within the United States,” Grassley said.
